Evaluating Your Website for Accessibility

In this hands-on workshop participants will step through the process of manually evaluating their current website for accessibility.  Topics include:

  • Interpreting the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0 A and AA)
  • Steps for manually checking accessibility
  • Brief introduction to screen readers
  • Page design considerations
  • Automated accessibility checkers
  • Captioning resources

Creating Accessible Documents in Microsoft Word

This hands-on workshop covers the process of creating accessible documents in Microsoft Word. At successful course completion participants will be able to:

Explain the importance of creating accessible documents.

Perform the steps necessary to create accessible Word documents:

  • Utilize styles and alt text, descriptive links and simple tables when creating new documents
  • Add accessibility features to legacy Word documents to make them accessible
  • Utilize the Office accessibility checker
  • Convert Word documents to accessible PDFs
  • Utilize Adobe Acrobat DC’s accessibility checker

Accessible Documents: Remediating Existing PDFs

This workshop will focus on incorporating accessibility features into existing PDF documents.  It is always better to build as much accessibility into the source document (.docx, .pptx or .indd) as possible before converting to PDF.  In situations where you don’t have the source document, you can build accessibility into an existing PDF using Adobe Acrobat DC.  Techniques include:

  • Converting an image/scanned PDF to real text
  • Tagging
  • Adding alt text to images
  • Creating headings and bookmarks
  • Adding table headers
  • Checking and correcting read order

Video Captioning

This workshop is designed for anyone who manages, creates or maintains video content and is offered in two parts.

Part 1: Captioning basics and third party services

  • Audience considerations
  • Caption types and terminology
  • Cost and resource considerations for DIY vs. captioning vendors
  • Vendor comparisons

Part 2. DIY captioning (optional)

  • Hands-on experience with captioning tools (please bring ear buds or headphones)
  • Caption file formats
  • Captioning rules and quality control
  • Costs and resources

Creating and Delivering Accessible PowerPoint Presentations

This hands-on workshop is designed for anyone who creates presentation materials using Microsoft PowerPoint. It covers not only making the PowerPoint slide set accessible, but also accessibility considerations when presenting and distributing or posting presentation materials.

Major topics covered include:

  • Using slide layouts
  • Adding meaningful descriptions to images
  • Designing accessible PowerPoint templates
  • Creating handouts in multiple accessible formats
  • Tips for presenting to inclusive audiences
  • Creating alternate formats of PowerPoint files for posting on the web or distributing via email

Creating Accessible Forms

This workshop will cover the basics of how to design forms for maximum accessibility.

Topics include:

  • What makes a form accessible
  • How to test keyboard navigation
  • Hands-on practice with the Adobe Acrobat DC Prepare Form Tool
  • Tips for various form types including: Frevvo, HTML, Qualtrics, WordPress
  • Using accessibility checkers for forms
  • Common form errors and techniques for remediating

Creating Accessible Documents Using InDesign

This workshop will cover core InDesign accessibility concepts and specific best practices for document accessibility.  Attendees should have a working knowledge of InDesign prior to attending.

Please note:  To accommodate a larger number of attendees, different operating systems (PC/Mac), and different versions of InDesign, this session will be held in a classroom that does not have workstations.  Participants are welcome to bring their own laptops with InDesign installed.

Topics covered include:

  • layout considerations
  • creating and mapping styles and tags
  • establishing read order
  • working with tables and hyperlinks
  • adding alternative text for images
  • export to PDF
